Date: 19 February 2019, Tuesday
Time: 19:30 – 23:00
Venue: Café L3, L3, 9, 68161 Mannheim

Who are the finalists?

Beesonix

www.beesonix.de

Team: Alexander Kowollik, Timo Häcker, Mark Kirn, Birk Schweppe, Sai Manoj Marepalli

BeeSonix enables the public transport infrastructure to communicate with smartphones. With ultrasonic announcements, stops and vehicles can record and report the location of a passenger to routing and ticketing platforms. Thus, we are able to offer pay-as-you-go systems and unique passenger navigation, allowing a relaxed journey and high flexibility. Alternative methods like Bluetooth or NFC cannot keep up with ultrasonic communication, as they require expensive hardware installation and maintenance or are not as precise as our technology. Also, GPS has strong deficits underground. Beesonix helps to avoid these issues.

Blauherz

www.blauherz.eu

Team: Sven Butz, Johanna Stolch, Celina Kirschner, Christine Netzhammer, David Grüning, Florian Damovsky, Gabriel Himmelein, Jonas Bruder, Julian Gruber, Julien Vogel, Michelle Beck, Patricia Meka, Pauline Machtolf

Blauherz is an inclusive fashion label that hand-tailors fashionable clothing that everyone, people with and without disabilities, can identify with. We produce style without borders and contribute to an inclusive society by integrating socially disadvantaged people into our production of inclusive and sustainable products.

RideBee

www.ridebee.de

Team: Lukas Mohs, Tobias Reinerth, Fabian Seitz

We offer a platform, where one can find a carpooling partner or group within their company and share the commute to work. To provide value to those who already carpool, we organize users conveniently in travel groups that know each other personally, encourage regular use through gamification and incentives and provide useful everyday features such as keeping track of payments and live location sharing. The solution is designed for larger company sites in suburban and rural areas. A 30 km commute one-way sums up to over 4.000€ of vehicle costs and 42 eight-hour workdays of mainly unused travel time per year. For companies, providing parking spots can be an expensive and tedious task, a stressful commute leads to an unproductive workforce and they have an increasing corporate social responsibility concerning the environment. The B2B approach specifically offers numerous advantages: As people are travelling to the same destination and at similar times, it becomes easier to reach a critical mass. Further, the social barrier is reduced among colleagues and the employer can be involved to encourage the use of the platform.

Who are the jury members?

  • Andrea Kranzer
Co-founder and Member of the Executive Board, Angels4Health e.V.
  • Frank Zumbruch
Head of Creative Commission Mannheim / Cultural Economy Officer, Startup Mannheim
  • Klaus Dibbern
    Advisor, Wingcopter
  • Marcel Vogler
Looks after Operations, Sales and Finance in Freigeist and Co-Owner of some McDonald's Franchises in Germany
  • Ruth Cremer
Lecturer at HS Fresenius University of Applied Sciences and CEO at euworx UG
  • Sonja Wilkens
Startup Consultant at Stadt Mannheim Wirtschaftsförderung

We are looking forward to an exciting competition!

About covexo:

covexo shifts the development of software from the local computer to the cloud. By providing an innovative synchronization technology, users of a covexo DevSpace can develop with their local desktop tools and still get all the benefits of the cloud, such as more computing resources and no installations and config issues on the local laptop. The locally written code is therefore transferred to the cloud in real-time, making a hot reload of the developed application in the cloud possible. For this, covexo DevSpaces heavily rely on the newest cloud technologies Docker and Kubernetes. covexo is providing its solution as an open source software and additionally offers a fully managed cloud development platform.
covexo was founded in 2017 by three graduates of the University of Mannheim. After being supported by the EXIST Business Start-Up Grant and winning several awards, covexo was invited to the final interview round of the Silicon Valley accelerator Y Combinator. covexo’s open source project providing the DevSpace CLI has been released at the end of August 2018.

Startup Lounge #41 - Pitch Battle Recap

What a reopening after summer break! On September 26th, the Startup Lounge Pitch Battle in Café L3 was a fantastic start of this fall´s event series with a lot of networking and new opportunities. We counted about 140 participants excited to witness the pitches of three very promising startups: Orderpoints, VlO Coffee and CoTutor.

We counted about 140 participants and this constitutes a new MCEI Startup Lounge record!

ku.bus (Kurpfalz Business Briefing) founder Oliver Brümmer opened the evening with a brief presentation about the ku.bus tour. On October 12th ku.bus embarks upon a special bus ride taking along corporate executives, entrepreneurs and founders on a journey through the Rhein-Neckar metropolitan area. ku.bus orchestrates news on business, entrepreneurial personalities, and lifestyle of the Rhine-Neckar region in a two-weekly newsletter.

Orderpoints started with the first pitch of the evening. They aim to simplify ordering for hotels, restaurants or catering services via their app. Guests can order food or drinks from special order points in the shortest possible time with their own smartphones. A pilot project is already running in a Best Western Hotel in Mannheim.

The second pitch was held by V|O Coffee - an online coffee retailer of high quality Vietnamese coffee in Germany. The founder Petra Vo and her team intend to disrupt the highly attractive coffee market through a brand driven approach.

Last but not least, the team of CoTutor presented their idea to the crowd. CoTutor is an innovative e-learning start-up offering exercises with high variability and an adaptive algorithm guarantying individualized learning paths based on performance. CoTutor is assisted by students of any field for content creation.

The winning team: Marc Philipp Janson and Niklas Katte of Cotutor and Oliver Brümmer (ku.bus)

The first prize (taking part in the ku.bus tour) went to Cotutor. Orderpoints and V|O coffee shared the second place. Orderpoints won MCEI cups for the team, filled with Café L3 Vouchers. V|O Coffee won an Innovation Box by our partner WhatAVenture. After the award ceremony, the floor was open for networking and discussions.

We would like to thank our partners ku.bus and WhatAVenture for sponsoring the prizes for our Startup Lounge Special. We are looking forward to continue these partnerships! We also thank the Café L3 for hosting another great event and making the time most enjoyable for our guests.

Startup Lounge #34 - MCEI Seed Award

The Startup Lounge is your place to get inspired to create something new, to discuss great ideas while hanging out with cool people and to meet startups, students and creative minds in a laid-back atmosphere. Join us if you are into start-ups and want to build a network in the Rhein-Neckar area!

We are going to kick off 2017 with a special startup lounge as we will find and award the winner or the MCEI Seed Award!

15 startup teams submitted their pitch decks by the January 15th deadline (some just before midnight!), most of which meet the eligibility requirements set forth in our call for the best University of Mannheim Startup 2016. Eligible pitch decks will be rated by a panel of independent external experts leading to three finalists, which will be announced on or around February 7th and will then receive invitations to pitch for the prize on February 14th at the Startup Lounge (from 7:30 pm), accross the street from the Mannheim Castle.

The final jury will include representatives of VC and law firms, the city of Mannheim and organizations that coach startups in the Rhein-Neckar region. After a brief decision period, the winners will be announced at the award ceremony.

The prize money (€ 10 000), kindly sponsored by the Heinrich Vetter Foundation, is meant to support the market launch of the startup’s product or service. All applicants will be eligible to join our new startup mentoring program in cooperation with the university’s alumni association, Absolventum.
