Internationalization @Mister Trip

The German travel industry continued to perform well in 2016, which in turn created stronger demand for virtually all travel-related products and services. This greatly motivates Mister Trip to grow its business as a startup and possibly even enter new markets while scaling up.

Mister Trip is the leading German online marketplace for tailor-made travel. More than 50 local travel agencies and experts in the destinations create personalized and authentic trips based on the customers’ requirements. Travelers benefit from their unique know-how, cheap direct prices and a secure booking/payment process via Mister Trip´s platform.

The MAN 633 Inside the Venture team helped Mister Trip to define a clear and systematic approach to find and choose new incoming agencies to work with. Additionally, the team consisting of Danilo La Farciola, Abdulrahman Bres, Massimo Zanesco and Kai Bruchmüller also supported the growth of  Mister Trip's portfolio by designing a strategy for prioritizing and entering new markets. Eventually, the team crafted a recommendation according to the developed tailored decision support system.

In her Inside the Venture project, Helen worked closely with the Mannheim startup Mister Trip. In the context of her thesis project, she has conducted a single case study and in-depth analysis on Mister Trip and, as a result, derived a teaching case from her qualitative data. The teaching case centers on market entry, business model development, revolutionizing a highly competitive industry and competing therein, and customer acquisition cost and lifetime value considerations. Students in MAN 630 will work with the case as of Fall Term 2017. After her project, Hellen followed-up with a startup internship at Mister Trip.

In her Inside the venture project, Franziska has analyzed and segmented potential customers of Mister Trip (Tervado GmbH). She has performed fundamental surveys and derived implications and clear recommendations from the data. This helps Mister Trip to improve and to better achieve product-market fit with their portfolio and to improve the communication of their offering. In her academic paper, Franziska analyzed determinants of Startup Ecosystems.

Startup Summit Baden Württemberg Recap

On July 14th, the Government of Baden-Württemberg hosted the first Startup Summit. Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann and Minister Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut gave the opening speeches. Dr. Hoffmeister-Kraut officially launched the new Start-up BW website during her speech. Start-up BW is a new brand, promoted by the Government of Baden Württemberg. Its website will be a platform for the campaign of promoting entrepreneurial spirit in Baden Württemberg. The ministers also emphasized their wish to make the universities the startup ecosystems´ core driver.

Over 150 startups displayed their products and business models at the Stuttgart Trade Fair. Grouped into ten cluster ecosystems, one of them was Mannheim – Heidelberg – Walldorf, were met some of our friends, like Pulseshift and 100 Worte. Our partner Mister Tip, located at the Mafinex Technology Center, was also present. Founder Michael Wurst came to the summit with his interns, taking this opportunity to let them have a first look at the startup scene.

The afternoon program included great podium talks around the themes of corporate management and finance, which gave many insights into investors’ thoughts and wishes. Winners of regionals pitch competitions gave amazing pitch presentations. Short interviews displayed successful cooperations between venture capital funds and startups. Project A partner Uwe Horstmann outlined the points he is looking for in a startup he wants to invest in, the main of which being a good team.

The day came to an end around the founder grill. The presence of regional entrepreneurs who promote local culture and food in a new, exciting way, such as Knöddel Kult or HeldenBrause, gave the Startup Summit a familiar characteristic.
The MCEI Team was happy to enjoy a great atmosphere, as well as a possibility to network with interesting Startups. Maybe some nice surprises for our startup lounge in September? Stay tuned!
