MAN 631 Pitch Battle 2019: The Latest Student Startups Live On Stage

On December 29, 2019, our new student startups form our accelerator course MAN 631 Creativity and Entrepreneurship present their exciting new ideas to the public for the first time in our MCEI Pitch Battle. Join us and show your support for all the teams and see the results they have been working on for the past months. They will pitch live in front of an expert jury and of course you! Five startups are pitching and we are excited to find the winner!

Startup Lounge #60 - MCEI Seed Award 2019 Finals
As February 19 draws near, we are getting ready to host the first Startup Lounge of the year! The 60th edition of the Startup Lounge would kick off with the much anticipated MCEI Seed Award 2019 Pitch Battle that will decide which of our 3 finalists of this season takes home the prestigious MCEI Seed Award of EUR 10,000. The winning team is awarded the Best University of Mannheim Student or Alumni Startup of 2018!
As promised before, we are ready to announce the 3 finalists that would be pitching their business ideas in front of an expert jury and the audience of the Startup Lounge Seed Award Special. After the jury’s assessment of the pitches, the winning team will be awarded the much coveted prize money of EUR 10,000 – a fund with no strings attached and no equity taken – to help advance the startup and foster its growth in its upcoming entrepreneurial journey.

Beesonix  |
Team: Alexander Kowollik, Timo Häcker, Mark Kirn, Birk Schweppe, Sai Manoj Marepalli BeeSonix enables the public transport infrastructure to communicate with smartphones. With ultrasonic announcements, stops and vehicles can record and report the location of a passenger to routing and ticketing platforms. Thus, we are able to offer pay-as-you-go systems and unique passenger navigation, allowing a relaxed journey and high flexibility. Alternative methods like Bluetooth or NFC cannot keep up with ultrasonic communication, as they require expensive hardware installation and maintenance or are not as precise as our technology. Also, GPS has strong deficits underground. Beesonix helps to avoid these issues. |

Team: Lukas Mohs, Tobias Reinerth, Fabian Seitz We offer a platform, where one can find a carpooling partner or group within their company and share the commute to work. To provide value to those who already carpool, we organize users conveniently in travel groups that know each other personally, encourage regular use through gamification and incentives and provide useful everyday features such as keeping track of payments and live location sharing. The solution is designed for larger company sites in suburban and rural areas. A 30 km commute one-way sums up to over 4.000€ of vehicle costs and 42 eight-hour workdays of mainly unused travel time per year. For companies, providing parking spots can be an expensive and tedious task, a stressful commute leads to an unproductive workforce and they have an increasing corporate social responsibility concerning the environment. The B2B approach specifically offers numerous advantages: As people are travelling to the same destination and at similar times, it becomes easier to reach a critical mass. Further, the social barrier is reduced among colleagues and the employer can be involved to encourage the use of the platform. |

MakeZme wins MAN 631 Final Pitch Battle - Ask Robbie, MARoom and TravelU with excellent performances...
One more time on September 4, four teams from our Creativity and Entrepreneurship in Practice course set out to identify still unmet customer needs in the market, subsequently developing business ideas with concrete business models and prototypes. After having worked on their ideas for weeks and months, their journey in the course finally ended with a Pitch Battle on November 30, where MakeZme, MaRoom, Robbie and Travel U presented their business ideas in front of an expert jury that included startup founders, startup consultants and industry professionals.
The Pitch Battle jury was overwhelmed by the high level of professionalism displayed by the teams during the pitches. In what was a head-to-head battle, MakeZme was awarded the first prize in a lively award-giving ceremony in Café L3, where the winning team performed their winning pitch once more. Having won the Pitch Battle, the team was awarded with seed money in form of a 500 EUR check by Startup Mannheim to advance their next steps. We are very grateful to Startup Mannheim for their support and would also thank MAFINEX-Technologiezentrum for providing our teams with an inspiring atmosphere by hosting the Design Thinking, Business Model Development and Pitch Preparation Sessions for our students.
How did the teams' entrepreneurial journey evolve over the past 3 months?
The startups all started from scratch with Day 1 being all about team building. Creativity and Entrepreneurship in Practice (MAN631) is not a conventional course with lectures, cases or simulations; it is rather about creating real new ventures in order to solve real customer needs. This requires a lot of dedication and team work; while sometimes the experience is fun, it can also bring a fair share of frustration along the way of developing an early stage startup that will withstand the expert jury during the final pitches. Classwork is only a minor component of the entire work — most of which is happening outside of the classroom. Finding out how to create value by solving a problem, customer development, endless field-testings and eventually the validation of their business models are all challenging tasks that are checked for progress in bi-weekly status reports. Continuous coaching on demand supports the startup development in this accelerator-style format.
The Startups:
- Started their entrepreneurial journey with team building: the "Egg Challenge". From the MAN 631 Kickoff onwards they started with ideation and shortlisted the most promising startup ideas.
- Went from a long list of problems to solve to a short list of three ideas that they then pivoted with customer exploration and prototyping methodologies.
- Constantly ran and re-ran the Customer Validation processes to pivot and carve out the most promising concept.
- Have undergone several cycles of Business Model Development.
- Have performed really well on their mid-term pitches on October 30.
- Have really rocked the Final Pitches on November 30!
- Are still continuously testing and improving their business models :-)
